How much of who you is by your own design? What grows you? Who changes you? Ape. A new American play about evolution, creation science and motherhood.
As Told By the Vivian Girls
A devised play by Devon de Mayo

World Premiere
Spring 2008
War by many has been called Hell, but I do not call it hell. In fact hell with its intolerable horrors, and so on, is only a tame cat compared to this dreadful horror. Hell has [no] place here, and if it was here, it would literally flee from the horrors of this greatest of wars.
A reclusive janitor and a secret artist: Henry Darger wrote over 15,000 pages of literature along with creating hundreds of paintings. Working in Chicago, he lived a solitary life, sharing his art with no one. Yet, his imagination overflowed with life in a world where little girls fight a war against child slavery. As Told by the Vivian Girls follows the girls' journey portrayed in Darger's work The Realms of the Unreal. Innocence is destroyed, allegiances are betrayed and war rages.
In this promenade performance the audience is free to choose what they watch and where they go. 15 characters on separate overlapping journeys move through various spaces and conflicts. The audience will explore the unknown and embark on a childlike adventure. |
